Learn more about women's hormone therapy
BIEST (bi-estrogen) is a compounded cream that combines estriol and estradiol. It's called bioidentical because these estrogens have the same structure as the ones your ovaries make. Compounding lets your provider set the strength for you.
Estrogen therapy is used for the symptoms that come with falling estrogen in perimenopause and menopause: hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. Responses vary, and your provider adjusts your plan as you go.
If you have a uterus, estrogen is usually paired with progesterone to protect the uterine lining. Your provider decides whether you need it after reviewing your history.
No. Estrogen therapy isn't appropriate for people with a history of breast or uterine cancer, blood clots, stroke, heart attack, liver disease, or unexplained vaginal bleeding, or who are pregnant. A licensed provider reviews your history and medications before prescribing.
Some people notice breast tenderness, spotting, bloating, or headaches, especially early on. Tell your provider about any reactions so they can adjust your dose, and seek care right away for chest pain, leg pain or swelling, or sudden vision changes.
